FARMED SALMON

Farmed salmon is worse for you than wild-caught salmon. Its feed however, just consists of wild-caught fish. Is farmed salmon an expensive interface between us and the wider ocean?

It was found that in 2014, 460,000 tonnes (507,063 tons) of wild-caught fish were used to produce 179,000 tonnes (197,313 tons) of salmon. Furthermore, 76 percent of the wild-caught fish were species that are commonly eaten by humans, such as anchovies and sardines.

Extrapolating those figures to a global scale, the scientists estimate that if people were to eat the wild-caught fish which are currently used in salmon feed, almost 4 million tons (3.6 million tonnes) of fish that are presently caught could be left in the sea each year. At the same time, a greater volume of fish would become available as a human food source.

When he gets a job with the forest service and sits around looking at ducks all day, that’s pretty smart. When he gets a 300k tech job and moves to New York so he can never see a duck again unless it’s on a plate, that’s genius.

• a 2-trillion dollar psychological / human-computer interaction / linguistic / neurological study on how to make reading and writing the same thing. this is the single biggest engineering challenge of the 21st century. nothing else matters. i honestly do not think humanity has the toolset necessary to solve ecological collapse or violent conflict or famine etc while reading and writing are different. we need to make them the same.
